Something I always say to my students at university is that it's always worthwhile reading different books about a subject. Not necessarily because they say anything radically different, but because it helps you to understand the subject better. Something which isn't perhaps well explained in one book might be much better covered in another book.

Reading older books about a subject is interesting from another perspective. It helps you understand how techniques and equipment have evolved over time. This gives you a good understanding of why particular ideas are recommended and also an idea of where things are likely to go in the future. That gives you some of the tools you need to make your own judgements.

So read widely! Books are wonderful!
